The co-hosts of ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday had some choice words for NBC host Megyn Kelly over her ongoing feud with actress Jane Fonda.
“The View” discussed the feud one day after Kelly castigated Fonda for criticizing their interview from September, when the NBC host asked whether Fonda’s plastic surgery has helped her “age beautifully and with strength.” Fonda last week blasted Kelly as a bad interviewer and referenced their awkward encounter on NBC’s “Today” show. Kelly responded on Monday, ripping the celebrity’s infamous behavior during the Vietnam War.
Whoopi Goldberg seemed particularly offended after seeing a clip of Kelly saying that Fonda “has no business lecturing anyone on what qualifies as offensive.”
“Nor do you, nor do you,” Goldberg said in response to the clip.
“To drag the Vietnam War into a plastic surgery conversation is a real stretch, Megyn. OK?” Behar added. “Also, why are people more angry with Jane Fonda than they are with Nixon or LBJ … it amazes me how you can focus on Jane Fonda.”
“It’s one thing to be a politician and set policy and send people to war. It’s a whole other thing to be an actor going over and spreading anti-war propaganda,” Meghan McCain said, appearing to have more sympathy for Kelly than her fellow co-hosts.
Fonda visited North Vietnam in 1972 and was photographed with North Vietnamese troops on an antiaircraft gun that would have been used to shoot down American planes, helping earn her the nickname “Hanoi Jane” when she returned to the U.S.
“This was a very, very big deal to many veterans,” McCain added.
Sunny Hostin said that she was particularly bothered by Kelly addressing Fonda’s criticism head-on during her show.
“What bothered me is, you know, I have never seen a journalist do something like that,” Hostin said.
“Who’s a journalist?” Behar responded. “Jane should have just said to her: ‘And how much work have you had, bitch?'”
Goldberg attempted to compare Fonda’s own “mistakes” during the Vietnam War to a controversial segment from Kelly’s time at Fox News.
“You know, Megyn, if I can forgive you for telling all my friends’ black children that Santa is only white,” Goldberg said to approval from her co-hosts. “You can step back because you made a mistake …we all make mistakes.”
“You gotta lighten up, babe,” Goldberg said, offering some on-air advice to Kelly.
